1. Setup for Self Haircut
“Mise en place” as it works for the setup required before cooking; it works for haircuts too. It’s almost like when you go on a long trip, first step is to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy the ride.
Tools for cutting your own hair
You can’t just grab a set of regular scissors and start cutting. You’ll need a very particular set of tools to get the right cut:
Hair clippers:
Then scissors, hair clips, hair cape
Place for self haircut
Your haircutting station should be in a well-lit and easy to clean room. Bathroom usually works geat as normally it has at least one mirror.
Have a hand mirror for a dual-mirror setup for your haircut: one mounted wall mirror and another one in your hand. You can use hand mirror to check out the back of your head.
Cut hair in front of a bathroom sink, so that water from the tap and the shower are immediately available. Hair cutting cape will keep the hair off your body. Consider adding more lights if necessary.

2. Select Style and Method to Cut Hair
Here are some videos to show you how to do haircut yourself. Watch all of them to find the similarities between the methods and advantages of each. Every self-cutter has their own tricks. You’ll develop some of your own very soon.
3. Do the Hair Cut
Once you know what you’re going to do, the actual hair cutting is pretty simple—but it helps to have exactly what you need at your disposal. That means you should pull out your clipper guards and have them at the ready. If you don’t already know, these guards are how you control just how much of your hair you’ll leave on your head when you take passes with your clipper.
First of all, wash your hair with a shampoo and conditioner, just like you usually do. Clean hair is easier to work with and will not clog up your tools like grimy, dirty hair usually does. Dry the hair with a towel but not completely. Leave it a little damp. Comb it out if needed to remove any tangles.
Stand in front of the mirror, holding the clippers in one hand. Have the hand mirror ready. It’s helpful when you cut the sides and back of your head. This is especially helpful when the time comes to clean up neck with the trimmer. Next steps depend on what style you’re aiming for. Just do it. If you are doing self-haircut for the first time just give yourself plenty of time and don’t rush.
